Billy Crystal’s musical adaptation Mr. Saturday night heads to Broadway after a recent engagement with the Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts. The musical, featuring a score by Tony-winning composer Jason Robert Brown and Tony-nominated lyricist Amanda Green, will perform at the Nederlander Theater (currently the home of The Lehman Trilogy) from March 1, 2022, with the opening night scheduled for March 31.

In Mr. Saturday night, Crystal returns as stand-up comedian Buddy Young Jr., whom he played in the 1992 Columbia Pictures film of the same name. Crystal co-wrote, directed, and starred in the comedian on a belt. borscht whose abrasive ego overshadows his success and alienates his family.

The project reunites Crystal with the film’s original co-writers, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who adapted their original screenplay. Winner of the Tony John Rando (Urine city, On the city) directs, with musical direction by David O and choreography by Ellenore Scott.

Barrington’s presentation also featured Tony winner Randy Graff (City of Angels, Wretched) as the wife of Buddy, Elaine Young and Chasten Harmon as agent, Annie Wells; both will resume their performances on Broadway. The additional casting will be confirmed later.

The staging, produced by Nederlander Presentations with a special arrangement by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures, also features sets by Scott Pask, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Kenneth Posner, video and screening design by Jeff Sugg, sound design by Kai Harada, and hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe. The production manager is Tripp Phillips.

In 2004, Emmy winner Crystal made her Broadway debut with her one-man show 700 Sundays, which won a 2005 Tony for Best Special Theatrical Event. The Broadway production was subsequently released as an HBO Special, garnering four Emmy nominations. Crystal offered a return engagement to the Broadway Imperial in 2013.
