Dubbed the Engines of the Fourth Generation of K pop, Stray Kids added another title to their name by becoming JYP Entertainment’s Top Million Sellers. The group consisting of Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and IN, has great popularity in South Korea and abroad. In August, the band regaled their fans with their second album titled Not easy.
The album was loved by fans and critics alike with skyrocketing sales internationally. However, the album not only had new Stays (name of the fandom Stray Kids) to their fandom, but also made it the very first million sellers for JYP Entertainment, one of the four biggest K pop agencies in Korea. According to a Korea Times report, data from local market tracker Gaon Chart revealed that the boyband has sold more than 1.22 million copies of Not easy. Released on August 23, the second full length album, produced by the 3RACHA subunit comprising members Bang Chan, Changbin and HAN, offered a mix of EDM and hip-hop in their singles like Thunder, Cheese, Domino, The View and SSICK. In the rest of the songs, the songs offered jazz-pop and rock sensations.
With huge fandom to support their businesses, the hype surrounding their second studio album was enough to foreshadow JYP Entertainment’s record sales numbers. Prior to its release, the album’s 930,000 pre-orders made it the very first JYP artist to do so. The impressive numbers were achieved by the group despite the pandemic, which seemed to have affected K pop slightly.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, Kim Jin-woo, chief researcher of Gaon Chart, confirmed that more than 24.59 million sales were recorded for the country’s top 400 albums in 2019. As the number has risen to 42 million in 2020. However, with 43 million in sales, the year 2021 has already broken last year’s record in just nine months. In other news, Stray Kids’ Thunder The clip surpassed 100 million views on Youtube on Oct. 18 to become the band’s fastest clip to do so.
