White House Twitter account trolls GOP lawmakers who got PPP loans canceled

A day after President Joe Biden’s student debt relief plan was widely rejected by Republicans, the White House Twitter account hit back, tweeting about GOP lawmakers who had “forgiven” the government’s loans. paycheck protection plan.

The account pointed out that Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, for example, had $183,504 in canceled PPP loans. This after Greene appeared on television saying, “for our government to just say OK, your debt is completely forgiven…this is completely unfair.”

The White House also fired Rep. Vern Buchanan, who had over $2.3 million in canceled PPP loans as well as Congressman Markwayne Mullin ($1.1 million canceled) and Rep. Matt Gaetz, (482 $321 cancelled) as well as several others, six in all.

The troll work was enthusiastically received by Democrats and their supporters, with one respondent commenting, “This is the type of response I want to see more of from this account.”

Those on the political right were less amused, and some pointed out that PPP loans were legislated by Congress, as opposed to Biden’s student loan order which may or may not be constitutional.

On Wednesday, Biden announced plans to forgive $10,000 in student debt for many borrowers earning less than $125,000 a year or families earning less than $250,000.

Unlike federal student loans, PPP loans were issued at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with the intention of being forgiven as long as borrowers met certain criteria, such as the use of payroll money. workers as the country shut down during the pandemic. .
